ALBERT SCHWEITZER IN BRIEF


1875                        Albert Schweitzer was born in 1875 in Kaysersberg, in the northern, then 
                                German Elzas, nowadays the French Haut-Rhin-region

1893                         He studied philosophy and theology at the Universities of Strasbourg, 
                                 Berlin and Paris. He also studies music in Paris with Charles-Marie Widor

1900                         Assistant pastor in the St Nicolai church in Strasbourg

1901                        Head of the Theological Seminary in Strasbourg

1905-1913               Schweitzer studies medicine and surgery

1913                        Departs to take up a post as doctor in Lambaréné in Gabon, Africa

1917                        Interns in France

1918                        Medical assistant and assistant pastor in Strasbourg - St Nicolai church

1919                        First major reading on “Culture and Ethics”, at the University of Uppsala in 
                                Sweden

1924                        Returns to Lambaréné and rebuilds the hospital; visits Europe regularly to 
                                deliver lectures

1939-1948               Lambaréné

1949                        First visit to the United States of America

1952                        Receives the Nobel Peace Price and uses the financial grant to build a 
                                separate village for sufferers of leprosy, the 'Village de Lumière', Village 
                                of the Light

1965                        Albert Schweitzer died on 4 September 1965 in Lambaréné
