3D assistive devices for children with disabilities – Malawi

Dinsdag 14 april 2026

Through this project, children with physical disabilities in Malawi gain access to custom-made assistive devices, such as braces and seating supports. These devices are produced locally using 3D printers and recycled plastic. Healthcare workers and caregivers are trained in their use and maintenance.

As a result, children receive appropriate support more quickly, improve their mobility and independence, and are better able to participate in school and daily life.
This project makes innovative care accessible and affordable in a resource-constrained environment.

Project

Children with physical disabilities often lack access to suitable assistive devices due to high costs and long wait times. This project produces locally made, custom-designed assistive devices using 3D printing and recycled plastic, enabling children to receive support more quickly and improve their mobility and independence.

Objective

Developing and manufacturing affordable, custom-made assistive devices using 3D printing, and training caregivers and healthcare providers in their use and maintenance. This improves children’s mobility, posture, and independence, and strengthens sustainable, local rehabilitation care.

Results

  • Hundreds of custom-made assistive devices produced
  • Improved mobility and posture in children
  • Caregivers trained in use and maintenance
  • Faster access to assistive devices without long wait times
